Vaccine-preventable diseases cause significant illness, hospitalization, and death when it comes to older adults. The statistics are staggering. According to the CDC, about 1 million adults in the U.S. are hospitalized with pneumonia every year, and about 50,000 die from this disease. Nearly 1 out of 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime. The flu is a deadly disease, patients age 65 and older account for 50% of hospitalizations for influenza. Whooping cough is on the rise with 48,227 cases reported to the CDC, and experts estimate the true number to be much higher.

HealthTalker surveyed consumers regarding their experience with adult immunizations and views on sharing information with friends, family and people in their networks. Criteria to participate in the survey required the participant to have received a minimum of one adult immunization. In total, 200 respondents age 50 and over participated in the survey.
